The Infrastructure and Projects Authority (IPA) works with industry to improve the delivery and performance of infrastructure.
In 2017, the IPA set out an ambitious plan for transforming infrastructure and the construction sector over the long term, through the Transforming Infrastructure Performance (TIP) programme. Benchmarking is a vital tool in improving the quality of project outcomes, successful delivery and demonstrating value for money.
Benchmarking uses historical information to identify standards and best practice. The process involves comparing projected, or actual, project performance information against similar information from past projects with the aim of improving assurance and delivery.
Understanding a project’s cost, carbon emissions and performance is critical for successful decision-making and delivery.
Benchmarking can be done at any point of the project lifecycle, but is most important at the early development phase.
As part of this, the IPA have launched a Benchmarking data service.
IPA Benchmarking data service
You can use this service to find, compare and submit project data for benchmarking. This service includes cost, duration and carbon data for completed projects.
This service is built on shared data from delivery teams to improve benchmarking capabilities and better estimate the costs of future projects. Benchmarking provides a valuable point of reference from past projects.
You must submit your own data when your project has been completed.
You should read IPA’s Benchmarking data charter before using this service. It details the principles that govern the use of the service, whether you’re a data consumer, or a data provider.
This service is for government departments and arms length bodies. You’ll need to create an account before you can use it.
